The 3-D print next to its prototype, a section of JDZ Column Tree in porcelain

Here are some images of the results Michael Zajac and I achieved at AssentWorks in the summer of 2013. After several tests, we printed a light fixture that was modelled after a porcelain section of one of my Jingdezhen columns. We had the porcelain column section scanned (see Scanning and Printing at AssentWorks), and then Michael spent many hours refining the 3-D model using MeshLab, Rhino and Form-Z software. Finally we were ready to print with the Zprinter, which uses powder with a binder to print the 3-D form layer by layer. The form, once printed, is heated  and then dunked into a vat of wax to help cure the binder.

Success at last!
