In May 2019 I presented a lecture and exhibited my new work at the Australian Ceramics Triennale Tasmania in Hobart, Tasmania. The international conference took place from May 1 to 4, 2019. I delivered a lecture on my innovative research with clay and fabric, and talked about how material and process inform my sculptural forms and surfaces. Host provides a good example of form integrating with surface as the result of using patterned fabric for model-making as a starting point.
In addition to speaking at the Australian Ceramics Triennale Tasmania, I exhibited work from my new Pyre series in the Presenters’ Exhibition at Princes Wharf One, Castray Esplanade, Hobart. The Pyre series explores porcelain, decaying trees, strange growths, grafted hybrids, and the return of the vessel in my work – all combining to convey themes of loss and regeneration. Dead wood has long been used to fire ceramics, but here the reclining tree fragments represent a commemoration of once-living entities – mourning loss and celebrating new life – creating remembrance and permanence through archaeobotany and the alchemy of heat.
