Made in Halifax as part of a series of work that responded to the devastation caused by Hurricane Juan in Point Pleasant Park (2003), Devastated consists of ten tree cross-sections made of porcelain that spell out the word “devastated.” Some are rather cryptic, but if you look closely, you’ll see that branch motifs in each cross-section depict one letter of the word. The photo of me standing next to the piece provides a sense of scale. This piece foreshadowed and led to my much larger tribute to Point Pleasant Park, an installation called Devastatus Rememorari (2008).
Devastated, porcelain with terra sigillata and oxide, soda-fired, 250 cm x 12 cm overall
